Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Urumqi on Tuesday to mark the 70th anniversary of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region's establishment, underscoring Beijing's commitment to regional stability and development. As General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, Xi led a central delegation to participate in celebratory events attended by diverse ethnic communities.
Local residents welcomed Xi and the delegation at Urumqi International Airport and throughout the city, showcasing cultural performances symbolizing cross-ethnic unity. The visit coincides with renewed focus on Xinjiang's economic growth, with the region reporting a 7.1% GDP increase in 2023 and improved infrastructure connectivity under China's Belt and Road Initiative.
Xi was accompanied by senior officials including Wang Huning, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and Cai Qi, Director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee. The delegation's itinerary includes meetings with local representatives and inspections of key development projects.
Since its establishment in 1955, Xinjiang has transformed into a vital trade hub connecting China with Central Asia and Europe. Recent investments in renewable energy and tourism infrastructure have positioned the region as a focal point for Eurasian economic cooperation.
