As the United Nations marks its 80th anniversary, climate change emerges as the defining challenge of our era. In an exclusive interview with KhabarAsia, UN Climate Adviser Selwin Hart emphasized the urgent need for collective action, stating: "Our shared future depends on bridging divides – between nations, economies, and generations."
Hart, special adviser to the UN secretary-general on Climate Action and Just Transition, reflected on eight decades of multilateral cooperation while charting a path forward. "The UN's role has evolved from post-war peacekeeping to orchestrating humanity's response to existential threats," he told senior correspondent Wang Guan during The Hub discussion series.
Three Pillars for Progress
The dialogue highlighted three critical areas:
- Accelerating decarbonization: Hart praised Asia's renewable energy investments but urged faster coal phase-outs
- Just Transition Framework: Ensuring climate policies protect vulnerable workers and communities
- SDG Alignment: Integrating the Global Governance Initiative with 2030 Sustainable Development Goals
When asked about China's role, Hart noted: "The world's largest renewable energy investor demonstrates climate leadership through action. Such commitment must become the global standard."
