Major European Airports Hit by Cyberattack, Flights Disrupted

A widespread cyberattack targeting a critical check-in and boarding systems provider caused significant disruptions at major European airports over the weekend, leading to flight cancellations and delays. The incident highlights growing vulnerabilities in global aviation infrastructure amid escalating cyber threats.

Heathrow, Berlin, Brussels, Dublin, and Cork airports reported operational challenges as airlines struggled to process passengers. Cirium data revealed 29 canceled flights by midday Saturday, with Brussels Airport advising airlines to cancel half of Sunday's departures. Passengers were urged to verify flight statuses before heading to terminals.

While aviation safety systems remained unaffected, the ripple effect on schedules underscored the interconnected nature of modern air travel. A European Commission spokesperson confirmed coordination with national agencies to restore services, emphasizing there was "no indication of a severe large-scale attack."

British Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander and German cybersecurity teams are monitoring developments. The incident follows a global surge in cyberattacks targeting healthcare, defense, and retail sectors this year, raising questions about critical infrastructure preparedness.
