China Tops Global Digital Economy Patents in 2024

China solidified its position as a global innovation powerhouse in 2024, securing more invention patents in core digital economy sectors than any other country, according to data released by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). The announcement came during the 14th China Intellectual Property Annual Conference, which focused on intellectual property challenges in the digital age.

Record Growth in Tech Innovation

Authorized invention patents in China's digital economy core industries surged to 500,000 last year – a 23.1% year-on-year increase that far outpaces global averages. Artificial intelligence emerged as a standout sector, with China holding 60% of the world's AI-related patents.

Global Confidence in Chinese Tech

The report highlights growing international engagement, with foreign enterprises from 95 countries and regions holding 407,000 valid invention patents in China's digital economy sectors. CNIPA head Shen Changyu noted: "This demonstrates strong foreign confidence in China's digital future." Overseas patent grants to Chinese innovators in these fields more than doubled since 2016.

Driving Digital Transformation

Analysts suggest these patent figures reflect China's strategic investments in next-gen technologies like 5G, quantum computing, and smart manufacturing. The growth coincides with increased R&D spending and policy support for homegrown innovation under China's latest Five-Year Plan.
