China, Portugal Vow to Strengthen Strategic Partnership in Beijing Talks

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Portuguese Minister of State and Foreign Affairs Paulo Rangel in Beijing on Monday, reaffirming commitments to deepen bilateral cooperation and advance multilateral coordination. The talks coincided with two key milestones: the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, and the 20th anniversary of the China-Portugal comprehensive strategic partnership.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, acknowledged Portugal's participation in recent commemorative activities honoring wartime solidarity. He emphasized the significance of Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro's upcoming visit, calling it an opportunity to 'elevate bilateral relations to new heights through enhanced political trust and practical collaboration.'

Rangel praised China's diplomatic preparations for the high-level visit, stating Portugal views its relationship with Beijing as 'strategically vital.' He endorsed China's Global Governance Initiative as a framework for addressing transnational challenges, pledging closer coordination within UN mechanisms and other multilateral platforms.

Both sides expressed optimism about expanding cooperation in trade, green energy, and cultural exchanges, with Wang noting China's willingness to 'share development opportunities' with European partners. The dialogue concluded with agreements to strengthen people-to-people ties, particularly through academic and tourism initiatives.
