Danish PM Condemns Alleged U.S. Meddling in Greenland Affairs

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has denounced alleged U.S. interference in Greenland's internal matters as "unacceptable," following reports of covert influence operations linked to American citizens with White House ties. The remarks came after Danish broadcaster DR revealed that at least three individuals connected to former U.S. President Donald Trump engaged in activities including mapping local political stances toward potential U.S. control of the Arctic territory.

"We have a very clear disagreement when it comes to Greenland. Any interference in the internal affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark, and in Greenlandic democracy, is unacceptable," Frederiksen stated during a press briefing. She emphasized that Copenhagen takes the allegations "very seriously" and has communicated its stance directly to U.S. officials.

The Danish Foreign Ministry confirmed it summoned the U.S. charge d'affaires for discussions, while Greenland's Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt joined Frederiksen in raising concerns with U.S. senators. Notably, Washington has yet to explicitly deny the reported activities.

This development follows years of geopolitical tension over Greenland, which holds strategic importance due to its Arctic location and mineral resources. Former President Trump previously expressed interest in acquiring the territory, even suggesting potential "military or economic coercion" in 2025.

Danish intelligence officials warn that Greenland has become a focal point for influence campaigns seeking to strain relations between Nuuk and Copenhagen. The semi-autonomous territory, while managing most domestic affairs, relies on Denmark for foreign policy and defense matters under its 1979 home rule agreement.
