Xi Jinping, Russian Duma Chair Strengthen Ties in Beijing Talks

Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed Beijing's commitment to deepening strategic coordination with Moscow during a high-profile meeting with Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of the Russian State Duma, on Tuesday. The discussion highlighted growing economic and political alignment between the two nations amid shifting global dynamics.

"China stands ready to work with Russia to promote greater development of bilateral relations," President Xi stated, emphasizing shared goals in maintaining global stability and opposing unilateralism. Volodin, leading a Russian parliamentary delegation, praised the "unprecedented level of trust" in cross-border cooperation spanning energy, technology, and cultural exchanges.

The talks come as bilateral trade between the neighbors surges, with Chinese customs data showing a 26% year-on-year increase in the first half of 2024. Analysts suggest the meeting signals continued momentum in implementing key infrastructure projects, including expanded energy pipelines and cross-border digital initiatives.

While addressing regional security concerns, both leaders stressed the importance of dialogue in resolving conflicts. The dialogue also touched on enhanced parliamentary exchanges, with plans announced for a new China-Russia legislative cooperation forum in 2025.
