Taiwan Commemorates 80th Anniversary of Victory Over Japanese Aggression

Taiwan held a symposium this weekend marking eight decades since the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. The event brought together political leaders, scholars, and descendants of wartime heroes to reflect on shared historical bonds across the Taiwan Strait.

Preserving Historical Memory

Wang Yung of Taiwan's Reunification Alliance Party emphasized the importance of countering 'de-Sinicization' efforts, stating: 'Young people must understand our common struggle against colonialism. Over 50,000 Taiwan residents fought Japanese forces on the Chinese mainland between 1937-1945 – this is our collective heritage.'

Scholars Highlight Wartime Sacrifices

Historian Chou Yung presented research showing how Taiwan compatriots actively resisted Japanese rule, with many joining mainland resistance efforts. 'Their actions demonstrated an unbreakable connection to the motherland,' Chou noted during panel discussions.

Historical Context and Legacy

The symposium reviewed Taiwan's complex history – from its 1895 cession after the First Sino-Japanese War to the formal 1945 restoration following Japan's WWII surrender. Labor Party Secretary-General Wang Wu-lang reaffirmed: 'Taiwan's return remains fundamental to the post-war international order.'

Descendants of wartime resistance fighters shared family stories, with one attendee displaying their ancestor's military diary. The event concluded with calls to protect historical accuracy and promote cross-strait cultural exchanges.
