SCO Strengthens Biodiversity Efforts with China’s Support

As climate change accelerates habitat loss across Asia, Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) members are forging unprecedented alliances to protect shared ecosystems. From the snow leopards of Central Asia to the mangrove forests of South Asia, cross-border conservation initiatives are reshaping regional environmental diplomacy.

From Policy to Action

SCO members recently operationalized 12 transboundary biodiversity corridors, enabling collaborative management of migratory routes and endangered species. China has deployed satellite monitoring systems across these zones, providing real-time data to all participating nations.

Capacity Building Drive

Through its South-South Climate Cooperation Fund, the Chinese mainland has trained over 1,200 environmental specialists from SCO countries since 2020. A new joint research center in Xi'an will focus on developing drought-resistant crops adapted to changing regional climates.

Economic Implications

These ecological efforts intersect with economic priorities. The SCO Green Investment Framework, backed by Chinese financial institutions, has redirected $2.3 billion toward sustainable infrastructure projects in member states since its 2022 launch.
