Beijing’s Robot Revolution: AI Companions Take Center Stage at World Conference

BEIJING – The future of artificial intelligence is on full display this week at the World Robot Conference in Beijing's E-Town, where over 100 companies – including 30 specializing in humanoid models – are showcasing machines that promise to transform daily life and business operations across Asia.

Visitors can purchase advanced AI companions complete with lifetime maintenance packages, while a fully automated restaurant staffed entirely by robotic chefs, waiters, and even musical performers offers a glimpse into automated service industries. The exhibition raises critical questions about technological adoption: How reliable are these systems in practical applications? Do their benefits justify the significant investment required?

CGTN correspondent Liu Jiaxin's live tour revealed robots performing delicate tasks from food preparation to customer interaction, though occasional technical hiccups highlighted ongoing development challenges. Business analysts note growing interest from manufacturers seeking automated assembly solutions and hospitality companies exploring labor cost reductions.

"What we're seeing isn't just about replacing human workers," said robotics expert Dr. Zhang Wei in an interview. "These technologies create new hybrid workplaces where AI handles repetitive tasks, allowing people to focus on creative problem-solving – a model already being adopted in Shanghai and Shenzhen factories."

The conference comes as China's AI sector reports 18% annual growth, with Beijing authorities approving 47 new robotics projects in Q2 alone. While prices for advanced models remain prohibitive for most consumers (basic service robots start at ¥85,000), organizers emphasize commercial applications in healthcare, education, and logistics.
