China Opens Lunar Samples for Global Research

China has greenlit 32 research teams to study lunar samples collected during its landmark Chang'e-5 and Chang'e-6 missions, marking a significant step in international space collaboration. A total of 30,881.8 milligrams of lunar material will be distributed to 25 institutions through the China National Space Administration (CNSA), accelerating discoveries about the Moon's composition and evolution.

The Lunar Exploration and Space Engineering Center confirmed the ninth batch of approved applications will support studies ranging from mineral analysis to volcanic activity timelines. This initiative aligns with China's broader strategy to share space exploration achievements while advancing its lunar research capabilities ahead of planned crewed missions.

Scientists highlight the value of these fresh samples – the first Moon rocks brought to Earth since 1976 – in addressing unanswered questions about our solar system. The transparent application process and controlled distribution framework demonstrate China's growing role in fostering global scientific partnerships.
