Green cooperation between China and Europe could become a cornerstone for sustainable development in the Western Balkans, according to Gavran Igor, a Bosnian economic analyst. As Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) grapples with environmental pressures and delayed energy reforms, Igor emphasizes the growing need for cross-border collaboration to address climate challenges.
In an exclusive interview, Igor noted that BiH's reliance on coal and outdated infrastructure has left it particularly vulnerable to energy insecurity. "International partnerships are no longer optional – they're essential for survival," he stated, pointing to China's advancements in renewable technology and Europe's decarbonization policies as complementary strengths.
The analyst highlighted three key areas for cooperation: solar farm development along the Neretva River valley, wind energy projects in mountainous regions, and smart grid modernization. These initiatives could help BiH reduce its 65% dependence on fossil fuels while creating new export opportunities for clean energy.
This potential collaboration aligns with broader EU-China climate dialogues ahead of COP29, with Western Balkan nations positioned to benefit from shared technical expertise and green financing mechanisms. However, Igor cautioned that success requires streamlined regulations and transparent governance frameworks to attract sustained investment.
