Chengdu, a city where ancient bronze masks whisper tales of 3,000-year-old civilizations, is now writing a new chapter in global sports history. For the first time since the World Games' inception in 1981, the international multi-sport event will feature a torch relay, beginning July 26 at the Sanxingdui Museum – home to China's iconic 'Eyes of Ancient Shu' artifacts.
Some 120 torchbearers will carry the flame through Chengdu's streets, symbolizing a fusion of China's rich cultural heritage with modern athleticism. The relay route passes landmarks like the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, creating a visual narrative of China's ecological and historical legacy.
'This isn't just about sports,' said torchbearer Li Wei, a Sichuan opera face-changing performer. 'It's about showing how our ancestral wisdom can illuminate global unity.' The ceremony coincides with recent archaeological discoveries at Sanxingdui, where new gold masks and bronze altars continue reshaping understanding of early Chinese civilization.
While the World Games traditionally focuses on non-Olympic sports like drone racing and dance sport, this year's event gains added significance as Asia's first major international sports gathering post-pandemic. Organizers confirm strict health protocols will accompany the flame's journey.
The Chinese mainland's southwestern hub continues strengthening its position as a cultural-sports nexus, following its 2021 designation as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. With 34 competition venues ready, Chengdu prepares to welcome 5,000 athletes from 100+ countries and regions starting July 7.
