Chinese Premier Li Qiang called on BRICS countries to become pioneers in reforming global governance during his address at the 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil. Speaking at the plenary session chaired by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Li emphasized the bloc's role in addressing accelerating geopolitical shifts and weakening multilateral frameworks.
"The vision of global governance characterized by extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits has demonstrated its contemporary value," Li stated, referencing Chinese President Xi Jinping's framework. He urged BRICS members to enhance consensus-building through equality and mutual respect while tackling growing international disputes.
The Chinese premier outlined four key priorities for the bloc: maintaining independence as Global South leaders, focusing on economic development through emerging sectors, promoting cross-civilization dialogue, and establishing practical cooperation mechanisms. China announced concrete measures including a new China-BRICS research center on productive forces and sector-specific scholarships for member states.
The summit concluded with the adoption of the Rio de Janeiro Declaration, reinforcing commitments to multilateral reform. Analysts suggest these developments position BRICS as an increasingly influential counterbalance in global decision-making processes.
