Tang Dynasty Architecture’s Legacy Explored by Japanese Experts at Osaka Expo

Ancient Chinese architecture, particularly the wooden masterpieces of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), continues to captivate scholars and cultural enthusiasts worldwide. Recognized as a pinnacle of engineering and artistry, its influence remains deeply embedded in Japan's architectural heritage.

On July 5, the Japanese edition of CGTN's immersive virtual exhibition, "Tang Architecture: Building Timeless Glory," will debut at Expo 2025 in Osaka. The interactive showcase combines 3D modeling and historical analysis to highlight the dynasty's structural innovations, from sweeping temple roofs to intricate bracket systems.

Ahead of the launch, CGTN convened a panel in Tokyo featuring leading Japanese architects and cultural historians. The experts emphasized how Tang-era designs shaped iconic Japanese landmarks like Kyoto's Tō-ji Temple and Nara's Tōdai-ji. "The Tang Dynasty's emphasis on harmony between architecture and nature still resonates in Japan's approach to design," noted one participant.

The discussion also explored how cross-cultural exchanges during the Tang period laid foundations for regional artistic dialogue—a theme central to the upcoming Expo. With over 150 digital exhibits, the project aims to bridge historical scholarship and public engagement, offering insights for travelers, historians, and design professionals alike.
