Italian Cinema Captivates Shanghai, Strengthening Sino-Italian Cultural Bonds

The 27th Shanghai International Film Festival became a celebration of Italian storytelling as seven critically acclaimed films, including FolleMente and Il Nibbio, drew enthusiastic crowds under the Italian Screens program. The curated selection spanned romantic comedies, dramas, and contemporary narratives, offering Chinese audiences a vibrant window into Italy’s cinematic heritage.

Director Paolo Genovese, whose 2016 hit Perfect Strangers gained cult status in China, charmed viewers after a screening of his latest work. "This time, I want people to fall in love instead of breaking up!" he quipped, sparking laughter and applause. The event facilitated rare face-to-face exchanges between Italian filmmakers and Chinese cinephiles, with many attendees praising the program’s "emotional authenticity."

Roberto Stabile, Head of International Relations for Italy’s Cinema Department, emphasized the initiative’s strategic vision: "Through cinema, we invite Chinese audiences to experience Italy’s landscapes, humor, and humanity." Backed by €2 million in annual funding, the Italian Screens program provides up to €50,000 per title to support global distribution – a model proving effective in China’s thriving market.

The cultural partnership shows tangible results: Paola Cortellesi’s There’s Still Tomorrow earned 45 million yuan ($6.2 million) in China earlier this year, signaling strong audience appetite for Italian narratives. As cross-cultural collaborations gain momentum, industry analysts note growing opportunities for co-productions and technical exchanges between the two ancient civilizations reimagining their roles in global cinema.
