China-EU Dialogue Explores Human Rights in Digital Age

As artificial intelligence reshapes global societies, representatives from China and the European Union convened in Madrid this week for a landmark human rights dialogue. The 2025 China-EU Human Rights Seminar brought together over 200 policymakers, tech experts, and civil society representatives to examine how emerging technologies impact fundamental freedoms.

Under the theme "Human Rights in the Context of the Digital-Intelligent Era," participants debated AI ethics frameworks and digital inclusion strategies. Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Li Wei emphasized "technology's potential to enhance social governance while protecting citizens' rights," citing China's digital public services expansion.

European delegates highlighted GDPR-inspired safeguards against algorithmic bias. A joint consensus document outlined principles for responsible AI development, including provisions for data privacy protection and preventing digital discrimination.

The annual dialogue – alternating between China and EU states since 1997 – concluded with plans for a 2026 follow-up seminar in Chengdu. Observers note this exchange comes as both regions navigate complex tech regulations amid competing innovation priorities.
