Iran Downplays Fordow Nuclear Site Damage After U.S. Strike

An Iranian official has asserted that damage to the Fordow nuclear facility from a recent U.S. military strike was limited to above-ground structures, dismissing claims of significant operational impact. Mohammad Manan Raisi, a Qom Province representative in Iran's legislative body, stated Sunday that critical underground sections of the uranium enrichment site remain intact.

Speaking to Tasnim News Agency, Raisi clarified that damaged surface-level infrastructure can be repaired and emphasized there were no nuclear radiation risks to nearby residents. The official added that sensitive materials had been removed from vulnerable areas prior to the attack.

The remarks come amid heightened tensions following U.S. President Donald Trump's characterization of the strike's effectiveness. Raisi framed the attack as "direct U.S. involvement in hostilities" and indicated Tehran would determine the timing and method of response.

Analysts note the Fordow facility's strategic importance due to its underground construction beneath mountain ranges. While surface damage might temporarily disrupt operations, the complex's hardened structure likely preserves Iran's nuclear capabilities.
