Kai Tak Sports Park Revives Hong Kong’s Athletic Spirit Ahead of National Games

Hong Kong's historic Kai Tak runway, once a gateway to the skies, now pulses with the rhythm of sneakers and rackets as the transformed Kai Tak Sports Park prepares to host events for November's 15th National Games. The 22-hectare complex – a US$4 billion redevelopment of the former airport – has become a symbol of the city's evolving identity, blending heritage with cutting-edge athletic infrastructure.

On the summer solstice, the park's 50-meter outdoor pool shimmered with synchronized swimmers while badminton players practiced jump smashes in climate-controlled halls. 'This place carries our aviation history, but now it writes Hong Kong's sports future,' said local coach Chan Mei-ling, watching her protégés train under the solstice sun.

The development comes as Hong Kong strengthens its role in China's national sports strategy, with the park set to host fencing, cycling, and basketball competitions. Economic analysts note increased interest from mainland businesses in Hong Kong's sports tourism sector, with hotel bookings near Kai Tak up 18% year-on-year.

For residents and visitors alike, the park offers more than elite facilities – its public running track tracing former flight paths has become a social media sensation. As day turned to night on the year's longest day, hundreds joined a midnight fun run illuminated by LED installations, their headlamps echoing the runway lights of decades past.
