Portugal’s New PM Montenegro Takes Office with Streamlined Cabinet

Luis Montenegro, leader of Portugal's Social Democratic Party (PSD), officially assumed the role of prime minister on Thursday, leading a 16-member cabinet focused on efficiency and reform. The swearing-in ceremony marked the culmination of a swift 18-day government formation process under President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

Montenegro pledged to tackle bureaucratic hurdles and modernize public administration, calling state reform the 'cornerstone' of his agenda. The restructured cabinet merges several ministries, including the newly created Ministry for State Reform, signaling a shift toward leaner governance. Goncalo Matias will lead this critical portfolio while serving as minister adjunct to the prime minister.

President Rebelo de Sousa acknowledged Montenegro's strengthened political mandate but cautioned that public trust remains conditional. The government's program faces parliamentary approval on June 17-18, a constitutional requirement before full authority is granted.

Analysts note the streamlined structure reflects growing pressure to address Portugal's evolving political landscape, where traditional parties face challenges from emerging movements. The retention of most key ministers suggests continuity in core policy areas despite administrative changes.
